Stable perfectly matched layers for a class of anisotropic dispersive models. Part I: Necessary and sufficient conditions of stability

چکیده
In this work we consider a problem of modelling of 2D anisotropic dispersive wave propagation in unbounded domains with the help of perfectly matched layers (PML). We study the Maxwell equations in passive media with a frequency-dependent diagonal tensor of dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. An application of the traditional PMLs to this kind of problems often results in instabilities. We provide a recipe for the construction of new, stable PMLs. For a particular case of non-dissipative materials, we show that a known necessary stability condition of the perfectly matched layers is also sufficient. We illustrate our statements with theoretical and numerical arguments. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification. 65M12, 35Q60.

Perfectly Matched Layers in Negative Index Metamaterials and Plasmas
This work deals with the stability of Perfectly Matched Layers (PMLs). The first part is a survey of previous results about the classical PMLs in non-dispersive media (construction and necessary condition of stability). The second part concerns some extensions of these results. We give a new necessary criterion of stability valid for a large class of dispersive models and for more general PMLs ...
متن کاملStability of perfectly matched layers, group velocities and anisotropic waves
Perfectly matched layers (PML) are a recent technique for simulating the absorption of waves in open domains. They have been introduced for electromagnetic waves and extended, since then, to other models of wave propagation, including waves in elastic anisotropic media. In this last case, some numerical experiments have shown that the PMLs are not always stable. In this paper, we investigate th...

An algorithm is presented to implement perfectly matched layers (PMLs) for the time-domain finite-element (TDFE) simulation of two-dimensional open-region electromagnetic scattering and radiation problems. The proposed algorithm is based on the TDFE solution of a special vector wave equation similar to the one in an anisotropic and dispersive medium. The impact of the PML on the stability of th...

An effective algorithm to construct perfectly matched layers (PMLs) for truncating time-domain finite-element meshes used in the simulation of three-dimensional (3-D) open-region electromagnetic scattering and radiation problems is presented. Both totaland scattered-field formulations are described. The proposed algorithm is based on the time-domain finite-element solution of the vector wave eq...
متن کاملTransient analysis of spectrally asymmetric magnetic photonic crystals with ferromagnetic losses
We analyze transient electromagnetic pulse propagation in spectrally asymmetric magnetic photonic crystals MPCs with ferromagnetic losses. MPCs are dispersion-engineered materials consisting of a periodic arrangement of misaligned anisotropic dielectric and ferromagnetic layers that exhibit a stationary inflection point in the asymmetric dispersion diagram and unidirectional frozen modes. The a...
